Counselor and Mentorship Program @ Happiness Is Camping | Hardwick Township | New Jersey | United States

The Counselor and Mentorship Program (CAMP) is available for all 16- and 17-year-old campers and siblings. The program will take place during Sessions 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Summer Camp.

Researchers at The University of Illinois conducted a study in 2017 regarding the effects of pediatric cancer on adult survivors. They found that adult survivors of pediatric cancer, especially those with brain tumors, are five times less likely to get a job than their peers without cancer and up to FIFTEEN TIMES less likely to go to college than their own siblings. We believe our responsibility for our campers continues long after they age out, so we developed the Counselor and Mentorship Program (CAMP).

CAMP features four components:

  • STEM Workshops: Campers participate in hands-on STEM workshops to provide them with skills they can use when seeking higher education. Participants will build robots, learn how to use a 3-D printer, complete science experiments, and research current scientific events in teams.
  • Life Skills Seminars: Campers will attend sessions led by professionals to learn valuable skills they will use the rest of their lives. Skills will include basic cooking, first aid, changing a car tire/jumping a battery, doing laundry, interviewing, and resume building.
  • Work Experience: Campers will earn valuable working experience for their resumes as “Counselors-In-Training.” Participants will assist in younger cabins for a couple hours each night, and responsibilities will include bringing campers to the infirmary, assisting counselors, and being positive role models for younger campers. Each participant will leave with work experience and the opportunity to request a letter of recommendation. Nearly half of our 2021 staff was comprised of CAMP graduates.
  • College Prep: Campers learn about the admissions process and the day-to-day life of a student pursuing higher education. They prepare for the SAT, meet with college admissions counselors, tour a college campus, and engage in roundtable discussions with current students.
