Pediatric cancer survivors face a myriad of late physical effects including increased risk of heart failure, lung disease, and muscle frailty. Despite these statistics, 20-50% of adult pediatric cancer survivors live sedentary lives. Survivors are 50% more likely to be obese than their own siblings.
Our friends at Saucony Run For Good have funded Outrunning Cancer, our new fitness initiative designed to improve long-term physical outcomes for children with cancer. Outrunning Cancer is a comprehensive exercise program designed to promote healthy habits through running, weightlifting, cardio activities, and more. Our campers will engage in daily physical activities and have the option to learn about weight training, join a camp running club, swim, and participate in dance classes.
Outrunning Cancer will culminate in a camp-wide celebration, and we’re giving YOU the opportunity to join in on the fun! On July 28th our campers will kick off the celebration live at camp by participating in a fun walk with an opportunity to complete a 5K to earn prizes. Once the kids kick off the festivities, registered walkers will participate virtually as individuals or as a team. The Outrunning Cancer Virtual Fun Walk will run from July 28th through July 31st.
Two lucky registrants will be randomly selected to receive a Happiness Is Camping Yeti Water Bottle. Our goal is to inspire our entire camp community to embrace exercise and lead active lifestyles!
As an added bonus, 16 and 17-year-old participants of our Counselor and Mentorship Program will host all aspects of the event so they can learn about marketing, event management, and fundraising!
